What's a good routine for healthy nails?

A simple, regular routine is often enough to make a difference. Five steps form the basis of good daily nail care:

  1. Clean gently with lukewarm water, avoiding harsh soaps.
  2. Hydrate daily with a hand and nail cream, and a repairing serum for nails and cuticles.
  3. File in one direction only, using a glass or cardboard file, rather than cutting, to prevent splitting.
  4. Treat with a polish adapted to the problem (Color Care for yellowed nails, Color Strong for brittle nails, Nail Corrector for a neat nude finish).
  5. Protect: wear gloves for housework or gardening, and avoid acetone-based removers.

Treatment polishes, serums, creams: which solution for which need?

Every nail problem has a solution. Here's how to navigate the PODERM® range based on what you're looking to correct.

  • For natural nail enhancement: choose the Nail Corrector range, semi-transparent perfecting care polishes that reveal the nail's natural beauty without masking it.
  • For yellow, damaged, or post-fungal nails: opt for the Color Care Tea Tree range, a nail care polish that purifies, de-yellows, and beautifies with each application.
  • For brittle, soft, ridged, or chemotherapy-weakened nails: go for the Color Strong range, a hardening polish enriched with keratin, biotin, and silicon.
  • For deeply damaged nails requiring regeneration: supplement with a Poderm repairing serum, see our collection of nail repairing serums.

What are the most common nail problems?

Before treating, one must understand. Here are the most common imbalances:

  • Brittle nails: often linked to a lack of hydration or excessive use of acetone-based removers. The Color Strong nail polish range is ideal.
  • Ridged nails: a sign of fatigue, aging, or deficiencies. To learn more, read our guide how to strengthen nails.
  • Soft nails: weakened by chemical aggressions or humidity. The Color Strong nail polish hardener range is ideal.
  • Peeling nails: caused by overly aggressive filing or insufficient intake of protein, iron, or zinc.
  • Yellowed or damaged nails: following a fungal infection, gel application, or artificial nails. We recommend the Color Care Tea Tree nail polish range.
  • Dull or irregular nails: lack of shine, slight surface ridges. We recommend the Nail Corrector perfecting nail polish range.

Good news: in most cases, appropriate care is enough to durably improve the health of your nails.

Which active ingredients and ingredients should you choose to care for your nails?

At PODERM®, each range is based on targeted ingredients, adapted to a specific problem. Each formula combines several active ingredients for both an immediate (surface) and lasting (over the weeks) effect.

  • Tea Tree (COLOR CARE range): purifying and clarifying active ingredient, ideal for yellowed, damaged or post-fungal nails.
  • Keratin, biotin and silicon (COLOR STRONG range): a strengthening trio for brittle, soft, peeling or chemotherapy-weakened nails.
  • Collagen, bluish mother-of-pearl and biopeptides (NAIL CORRECTOR range): perfecting and illuminating active ingredients to reveal the natural beauty of the nail without masking it.
  • Vegetable oils (repair serums): deep nourishing care for the nail matrix, as a treatment or in conjunction with a varnish routine.

How to strengthen your nails naturally?

Daily hydration is key. Apply a PODERM® restorative serum or a vegetable oil to your cuticles every evening. For your diet, favor foods rich in keratin, iron, zinc, and B vitamins (eggs, fatty fish, legumes, dried fruits). Avoid acetone-based nail polish removers, which dry out the nail and weaken its structure. Alternate between periods with and without classic nail polish, opting for treatment polishes whose hold and formula respect the nail.

For brittle or damaged nails, regular use of a serum over several weeks provides a visible effect on the quality of regrowth.
