Athlete's foot is a fungal infection primarily caused by microscopic fungi called dermatophytes. These infections thrive in warm, moist environments. The main causes are:

• Factors related to humidity and hygiene: insufficient drying of the feet (especially between the toes), excessive perspiration, prolonged wearing of damp, dirty or synthetic socks which prevent the evacuation of perspiration.
• Factors related to lifestyle habits: regular sports practice (running, fitness, indoor sports), wearing the same shoes for several days in a row without ventilation, frequenting places with a high fungal reservoir (gym, swimming pool), sharing towels, bath mats or shoes.
• Skin factors: micro-lesions of the skin (cracks, blisters, cuts), skin weakened by excessive use of soaps, imbalance of the skin flora or presence of onychomycosis.
• Medical factors and weakened immune system: diabetes, blood circulation disorders, advanced age, frequent history of fungal infections.
